Actress Milla Jovovich has teased this week that the first trailer for “Resident Evil: The Final Chapter” is set to go online on August 9th. To celebrate that, a few hours ago she posted a ‘teaser of the trailer on social media and which you can check out below. On top of that, she says that right after the new trailer launches she will be participating in a live Q&A on her Facebook page. This sixth and apparently final film in the series wrapped production in December in South Africa. The new film ties back into the characters, themes and the environment of the Hive from the first movie as Alice returns to Raccoon City where the Umbrella Corporation is gathering its forces. The film itself opens January 27th next year.

A Japanese Olympics star has blamed Pokémon Go after being hit with a 500,000 yen (about $5,000) bill in roaming charges from his carrier. Artistic gymnast Kohei Uchimura, who won gold at the 2012 Games in London and is the reigning world champion, said he only downloaded the game after arriving in Sao Paulo to train for Rio, but quickly got hooked despite not having arranged a flat rate for data roaming. Uchimura "couldn't believe his eyes" when he saw the bill, according to the Kyodo news agency, with teammate Kenzo Shirai saying "He looked dead at the team meal that day." Even though Pokémon Go isn't particularly heavy on data and there were likely other culprits — the game only officially came out in Brazil today, though Uchimura may have been playing the Japanese version — roaming charges can rack up extremely quickly when you use your phone abroad for pretty much anything online. The story has a happy ending, though — after Uchimura called his carrier to explain, he was let off with a flat daily charge of around $30, which is enough to make him probably wish he'd just bought a Brazilian SIM card but you know, not $5,000.

The LHC Didn’t Find a New Particle After All THE LAST THIRTY years of particle physics have been a little disappointing. A scientist’s job is to prove themselves wrong, but despite their best efforts, despite recreating the conditions of the Big Bang, particle physicists just keep being correct. Aside from a few unexplained observations (meddling neutrinos!), the Standard Model, which describes interactions between all known particles, has exactly predicted the outcome of every experiment in the history of particle physics. Physicists try to prove it wrong, and they keep failing. Last December exposed the field’s latent craving for novelty. That’s when CERN announced a collection of unexpected observations at the Large Hadron Collider. Scientists quickly submitted over 500 papers, each inventing a new way to explain the observations, which seemed to blast holes in the hull of the unsinkable Standard Model. But in a new paper uploaded last night, CERN makes it clear that the search will have to continue: The exciting measurements were nothing more than statistical blips. Scientists will discuss these results in more detail later today. Something similar happened four years ago. After improvements allowed the LHC to reach previously unachieved energies, the accelerator started up again, and ATLAS and CMS both saw extra photons summing to 125 gigaelectronvolts. Teams searched again a few months later to check their results—and continued to see photons at the exact same energy. They were definitely observing a brand-new particle. At the time, though, there remained a single unconfirmed piece of the Standard Model: ATLAS and CMS had found the Higgs boson, the final piece of the puzzle. The photons at 750 gigaelectronvolts wouldn’t be completing any puzzle. They’d be extra pieces to the one already completed by the Higgs. “This was extremely intriguing,” Giudice says, “because it could not be explained by the Standard Model. This was absolutely clear.” The Standard Model does predict some photons summing to that energy, but nowhere near as many as ATLAS and CMS observed last year. Physicists flooded journals with papers, inventing potential new physics on the fly or adapting existing frameworks to account for the extra photons. Meanwhile, ATLAS and CMS continued to search for more data, just like they had for the Higgs. http://www.wired.com/2016/08/sorry-folks-lhc-didnt-find-new-particle/
