Супкултура настала у Јужном Бронксу проширила се на сваки кутак планете и постала најутицајнији и најпожељнији музички правац данашњице. За тих пола века, налик људском бићу, хип-хоп је прошао успоне и падове, који су му формирали личност и основне вредности. Пре пола века одржала се журка поводом краја летњег распуста и повратка у школу и наизглед класична младалачка активност, угођај за локалце, постаде "Велики прасак“ хип-хопа. Од тог момента је све почело. Из Сеџвик Авеније 1520, Бронкс. Афроамериканка Синди Кембел организовала је журку на којој ће њен брат Клајв Кембел бити ди-џеј. Мишићав и разбацан, Клајв је себе назвао DJ Kool Herc, алудирајући на Херкулеса. Имигрант са Јамајке дизао је и спуштао грамофонску иглу на исте, "заразне“, делове песама изнова и изнова, набацујући риме и шале зарад што боље атмосфере.
