Popular Post Crash Override
Why Mad Men Ended Its Season With a Lie *Spoilers ahead for Mad Men Season 7, Episode 7, titled “Waterloo.” The best things in life aren’t free, and Don Draper damn well knows it. Last night’s mid-season finale of Mad Men (see you in 2015!) proved, once again, the one thing Don will always fight for when it’s threatened: his work. He lets Megan go over the course of a brief, generous phone call; he calls his kids the night of the moon landing but can’t convince Sally to give up her posturing teenage skepticism. But when it’s time to fight for his job, or the success of those he only knows because of his job, he’s focused and thrillingly Draper-like. The episode ends with Don improbably back on top— safe in his job, incredibly rich thanks to the merger deal, admired more than ever by Peggy. And then Bert Cooper’s ghost shows up to yank it all away. And thus the first half of the seventh season of Mad Men ends not with a rabbit-out-of-a-hat victory for our heroes (which would have been too much of a repeat of Season 4’s heist-like “Shut the Door. Have a Seat”) but with a reminder that Mad Men is still about Don Draper, the man who is eternally left wanting. (“What are you starving for?” Peggy might ask in Burger Chef pitch-mode). Cooper telling him that “the best things in life are free”— that even the moon is ours, no matter the fact that Neil Armstrong was busy walking on it— is in direct contradiction to everything Don and those around him have valued in the episode. At the thought of $1.5 million worth of shares in SCDP, Joan let go of her simmering fury at Don, and Pete’s eyes basically turned into cash registers. Ted Chaough, earlier so despondent with advertising he nearly crashes his own plane full of Sunkist executives, is swayed back into the fold with a classic Draper push; and Jim Cutler, the gray-faced villain of the episode, goes along easily, saying “It’s a lot of money!” Money spoke the loudest in this episode, as Roger knew it would when putting together the deal with McCann Erickson to purchase SC&P. But Bert Cooper, finally, speaks the loudest, reminding Don Draper how little all that money has really gotten him. Peggy’s hair-raisingly-good Burger Chef pitch, plus Sally Draper’s Betty-echoing stance while smoking and considering the stars, are tiny victories for other people that imply maybe the end of Mad Men won’t be exclusively, once again, about Don Draper trying to heal that internal wound. The version of Don in this episode is the one everybody likes— persuasive, clear-headed, forward-thinking, slightly self-sacrificing— but I’m not sure we can count on that sticking as the last seven episodes unspool. We’ve watched Don Draper have revelations before, even in the form of hallucinations or ghosts, and the downward spirals continued to play themselves out. Is firmly establishing Peggy as his successor going to be enough to convince Don of his impact on the world and get him out of self-pity? Or will it just be the next catalyst for destruction, from the man whose primary fear is that he has nobody and has done nothing? There are only five months left in the 60s following the July 20 moon landing; how much story is left to unspool? How are we, TV viewers like Don Draper in that we’re never satisfied with what we get, going to feel when it’s all over? If the end of Mad Men is really trying to convince us that Bert is right, and the best things in life are free, then the final episodes have a lot of work to do. But I think it’s right, Don’s tear-filled eyes be damned, to be a little skeptical. It is, after all, just another idea that some smart man in a suit is trying to sell us.

alfa
http://www.theatlantic.com/entertainment/archive/2014/05/mad-mens-mid-season-finale-one-giant-leap-for-peggy-olson/371576/ Over and over again, "Waterloo" tried to define Don Draper. He is "an old, bad boyfriend," the kind of guy "a teenage anthropologist would marry." He is "a bully and a drunk." He is a "football player in a suit." He is "a sensitive piece of horseflesh.” He is "a pain in the ass." All these definitions, and none fit Peggy is the Jesse Pinkman to Don Draper’s Walt—she’s not perfect, by any means, but she deserves a happy ending.пустио сам сузу опет!
