QuakeCon 2007 zavrsen Q4/Q3 > Q1/Q2
ZeRoQL replied to Muerte's topic in FPS - QuakeLive, Unreal Tournament...
GamingJunky: This is your 13th win in a Quake tournament in over a year, how do you feel? toxjq: It felt really, really good to win QuakeCon 2007! It was probably the best final I have ever played. It was amazing with the stage, the spectators and everything else. GamingJunky: Many people thought the winner of the tournament would come down to whoever had the best luck in the coin-toss. Do you agree? toxjq: The coin toss effected the tournament sure, but in my eyes there were only 4 people able to win the event: me, fojji, PURRI and Dahang. GamingJunky: Out of everyone in the tournament, who did you fear coming up against the most? toxjq: I did see Fojji as the hardest opponent for this event, because I knew that he had practiced QW a lot before QuakeCon, and that he already has the skill in Quake 3 and Quake 4. GamingJunky: Do you think that if the 5th map was something else then we might have been seeing a different winner? toxjq: I think that I had advantage that it was Q4 as the final map, but I also believe that I would have won the final if it was Quake 3 - but it would have been tougher in Quake 1 and Quake 2 for sure. GamingJunky: There were rumors going around that you did not practice Quake 2 or Quake World before this event, is that true? toxjq: I did not practice any Quake2 before the event, but I did play some Quake World, but I was focusing more on the map dm4, so I had only played aerowalk two times before the event. I was practicing Quake 4 and Quake 3 the most before QuakeCon. GamingJunky: Do you think that it's fair that someone can totally discard a game in a tournament with 4 different Quake games yet still win? toxjq: I thought I could make a great tournament if I was strong in Quake 4 and Quake 3, so that was my main game I was focusing on, because I figured that's what I will be playing in the semi finals and in the hard games. Then I just played some Quake World to be able to win against the unknown players coming to the tournament. So I would risk being knocked out by someone that played Quake 2 and I picked Quake 4 and then the coin toss would be Quake World. GamingJunky: Well obviously the strategy worked well for you! What do you think about the tournament overall? (eg: how they used all 4 games) toxjq: I guess it was a fun thing to do, just to show some cool games for the fans that always follow our games and every event we go to, but I prefer to play only Quake 4 1v1. That's what I enjoy playing 1v1 in, and not only cause I have won a lot of events - I liked Quake 4 1v1 from the beginning and I still like to play it and compete in that mode. GamingJunky: When practicing for Quad Damage, did you discover an underlying love for any of the other Quake games? toxjq: No. I would say that I got a flashback, and realized again that Quake 4 is the best 1v1 game I have ever been playing. But I still believe Quake3 is the best game ever in team death match. GamingJunky: What do your friends and family think about your professional gaming career? Do they support it and understand it? toxjq: Yes to 100%, My parents have always allowed me to play videogames, because they know that I will take responsibility in life, even if I play videogames. Most of my friends are playing them themselves or have been playing games before, so we enjoy doing the same things. The most important for me is that I know my brother and sister and my parents are watching my games even if the games are 04.00 am. They are watching on their 50" LCD TV stream when I'm playing. My dad knows every player also so he knows the scene. GamingJunky: The main stage at QuakeCon this year was more impressive than any from previous years. How would you compare it to playing in any other finals? toxjq: I think this was the best final I have every played in so far. It's nice to have a room full of people that only are there to watch Quake, understand what Quake is about and know the players etc. The spectators cheered and screamed and there were a lot of emotional feelings in the room, it was just great! GamingJunky: Could you hear the crowd screaming at you to pummel fojji in the Quake 3 / 4 games? toxjq: No I most have missed that comment (smiles). When I'm playing a final I'm so focused so I don't even know that I'm on a stage or that people are watching us play. GamingJunky: Is there anything special that you do before a match to pump yourself up to win? toxjq: Right before the game, I usually just try to be relaxed and be confident about my game. The most preparation I usually do before I go to the event (usually on the flight overseas), I always thinking about who my opponents will be and how I played them last time and how they were playing etc. Then I see myself already winning the tournament, and seeing myself jump around the map and get into different kind of battles and how I would be acting in that situation. GamingJunky: Once this year is over, most people think that it's the end of Quake 4 at professional tournaments and the dawn of UT3. Will you pick up UT3 or stay loyal to Quake? toxjq: I will finish this year of Quake 4, then I will have a look what options I have. But I want to continue with playing professionally, so if that means that I need to change game, I believe I have to do that. GamingJunky: Did you boot camp with anyone before this event? toxjq: No. I did play online as I usually do. I was forcing Naani (a Swedish player) to play me mostly in Quake 4 and Quake 3 even that he hates Quake 3… so I want to say thank you to Naani for helping me get prepared for this event as well as all the other events he has been practicing with me for. GamingJunky: You've been to pretty much every single event around the world that has Quake 4, which one is your favorite? toxjq: I like WSVG for the organization they have while running the tournament, but QuakeCon have the best finals. GamingJunky: Any last words? toxjq: I want to say thank you to the Fatal1ty brand for all the support in my gaming career, and a big thank you for everyone that have been cheering for me all this years and still are, I appreciate all the support… thanks!
