80 video games selected for Smithsonian art exhibit

The argument over whether video games are art has raged for quite some time now. Perhaps the Smithsonian American Art Museum's The Art of Video Games exhibition will put things to rest. With help from game developers, journalists, and other industry vets, the museum came up with an initial list of 240 games to consider for inclusion in the exhibit. Nearly 120,000 people voted on that list, paring it down the 80 games that will appear in the exhibit. You can view the full collection of winners and nominees here (PDF).

Scrolling through the list of games brings back fond memories, and there's a good mix of new and old titles. Minecraft made the final cut, as did Bioshock, DOOM II, Portal, and Donkey Kong, just to name a few. The games will be showcased with still images and video, and visitors will also be able to play five of them: Pac-Man, Super Mario Brothers, The Secret of Monkey Island, Myst, and World of Warcraft. I wonder how many addicts that last option will spawn.

Although the final list of games was announced late last week, the actual exhibition won't happen until 2012. The Art of Video Games is scheduled to run from March 16 to September 30 of next year. Field trip, anyone?

Podeljenog sam misljenja. Negde se odusevim, negde smorim. Mislim Bathesda pominjana koliko puta a samo jednu igru je napravila dok drzi prava za ostale :(. Minecraft koji je pobedio Starcraft II :)
